Kate Moss @ Topshop 12th collection launches tomorrow...

...will there be no end?! It feels like only yesterday that I was standing outside topshop armed with camera and notebook, reporting on the launch of the first Kate Moss collection (that was in the days before this blog) People queued round the block-it was exciting and innovative and you came out the other side owning a little piece of Kate Moss. I interviewed girls that we're squealing about their sucesses and falling over themselves for a glimpse of each piece. And I genuinely feel like that collection (although, even then, not particularly fashion forward) was certainly inspired by Kate's style and therefore perfect for anyone coveting her distinctive look.
.
Roll forward 12 collections (I still can't believe it's that many) and I know i'm not the only one who's tired of it all. I know that both because you guys tell me and because of the massive quantities of Kate Moss stock on the sale rails and in the now famous topshop outlet store. But I also know that the collection just doesn't feel very Kate anymore; it could've (and probably was, lets not be niaeve) been designed by anyone. You don't see her wearing her own pieces anymore. Well, except maybe to the launch party. In the months after the launch of the first collection you couldn't move for pictures of Kate (and various other celebs in fact) wearing her own designs. It just doesn't feel genuine any more, and I feel like your paying extra for ordinary topshop clothes with a supermodel name on the label. It makes me tired just thinking about it.
.
Anyway, for those of you that still care (and I do still like to look at the pictures and think about them) here is my pick of the best. The blurb follows:

Kate Moss Topshop Christmas 2009 presents a collection of luxurious yet sophisticated oriental-inspired pieces, perfect for day and evening festive wear. Influences of traditional Chinese and Japanese clothing run through the collection.Continuing from the previous season, Christmas embraces chic, smart tailoring.Underwear makes a prominent return this season, with the debut of nightwear. Beautiful printed chiffons in triangle shape bras and teddies are feminine, whilst a leopard print balcony bra with an eyelash lace trim has instant sex-appeal. Floral printed silk pyjamas are adorned with an embroidered ‘K’ and come with a drawstring bag in the same material making it the perfect gift for Christmas.
.
Etc until you enter a deep sleep.

Kate Moss A/W 09 launches tomorrow....

...but do we still care or not? (or, indeed, did we ever care?)

*Photos stolen with love from topshop.com
.
I love the jacket in the top picture (in all its wonderful textured feathery loveliness), and Kate is still looking gorgeous! But I wonder how much of the rest of the collection is standard topshop fare (not neccessarily a bad thing!) dressed up on a supermodel with some very clever styling thrown in for good measure!

What do you think?

Kate Moss for Topshop SS09: A quick update!

Hey guys,

This is just a very quick update on the Kate Moss collection which is launching today, and which everyone is raving about (I really should go and see why before I pass any judgement!)

If the thought of standing in line for an hour and being jostled by the crowd, just to buy a new dress, makes you feel a bit sick then I think I have the solution!

As I mentioned yesterday, the new Kate Moss collection features a selection of vintage Liberty print fabrics from the year Kate was born. In celebration of this, a selection of the pieces are available in the Liberty London store. It's a lovely department store anyway, but even better if you can get your hands on the pieces you wanted without the hassle!

No jostling, no anxious teenagers. Now isn't that a better way to get your hands on the apparent "must have" collection of the season?

Kate Moss for Topshop SS09 hits stores tomorrow

I think the title says it all: if you liked the last Kate Moss for Topshop collection you'll probably like this one (they all seem a bit samey to me!) There is a twist this time though: In a first for Topshop, the new collection includes seven key pieces sporting prints inspired by Liberty's design archive. They hit the stores tomorrow morning, so get up bright and early and hit the shops, whichever side of the Atlantic you happen to be on!
When I saw these pictures I was more interested in how Kate looked than in the dresses. There's no doubt that Kate looks amazingly gorgeous in these shots. She says the look was inspired by photos of her mum in the 70s. But when I see these images it only reminds me how important styling and good photography is in promoting a campaign, and that getting that right can turn almost anyone into a model.
.
I'm not a huge Kate Moss fan although I do admire her attitude and her business acumin. But when you put the usual photos you see of Kate (looking hungover, wearing those faded jeans again, hair slicked back and almost always looking the wrong side of wash day) alongside these its almost impossible to tell they are the same person. And would you be inclined to buy a dress sold by the Kate you often see in the tabloids? Selling clothes is like selling yourself in any line of work: you have to look the part to convince other people that you are!
I don't yet know how these dresses look in person (rest assured I will be trying them on for your viewing pleasure!) but it always scares me a little when clothes are overstyled to look good- if Kate Moss needs that skirt swirling around her waist for it to look good, how is it going to look on me?! Does everyone remember the boxy star shirt from the last collection? They had to unbutton all but one button to make that work and nobody brought it!
.
Having said that, I always say that a good hair cut and the right make up can make anyone look and feel better about themselves, and Kate Moss is certainly living breathing proof of that! She looks absolutely stunning and i'm even toying with digging out my old rollers and giving that hair 'do a go myself!
.
Lots of love,
Tor

B&T meet Kate Moss in a darkened Topshop

Hello All!

Sorry for my long long absence. As Becky quite rightly stated in last weeks posts, what with my jobs and my thesis proposal, I am an extremely lazy Tor. However, on Wednesday I did find the time to meet the lovely Becky for a sandwich and a cup of tea, and a wander around Topshop.

For anyone who doesn't recieve overly enthusiastic 'Topshop style notes' in their inbox twice a week, the Kate Moss summer range was launched on Wednesday. Now Becky and I both describe Kate Moss's offerings for Topshop (often simultaneously) as Blah, with a capital B. However, as we were in the city sitting opposite Topshop, we decided to keep our minds open and (for the sake of you all) pop in and have a look.

Armed with Beckys super camera, which is approximately 10 times better than my own, we each took the 5 items we liked most into the changing rooms and tried them on. The results were less than impressive; in fact, there was nothing in the whole range I would wear if it was being given away (and free is my favourite price!) If you can bare to see the sad faces and bulging flesh then here they are:

I think my face says it all. As you can see, I couldn't fasten the zip around my bust; having said that, even if it had fastened, that would have been the least of my worries. The dress was made of 100% silk, so it felt really nice on my skin, but the fit was horribly unflattering. The oversized handkerchief skirt made me look wide and I felt unsexy and like I was wearing maternity-wear. Definitely not a good look. These next 2 items are the most scary an unflattering of them all; be prepared:
I am a pretty standard size 14, but both the jacket and the dress felt horribly, horribly tight. And my poor poor swished flattened boobs didn't know what to do with themselves:

Jacket (£65)

Flatter than two bulging lumpy pancakes. And to be honest, even if you jacket hadn't hated my upper body, I still wouldn't have worn it. The embroidery was uninteresting, and the pin-stripe didn't inspire me at all. And if the tightness of the jacket is making you wince, wait til you see the dress:

The '80s style Madonna-eque triangle boobs were definitely not made for me. However, I did like the stringy neckline, and again the material felt really nice (although in this case it looked really cheap) I can see this dress looking fabulous on someone tall and slender; Kate Moss maybe, but it definitely wasn't designed with curvier girls like me in mind.

Enough of this torment! I think its time to look at the only thing I tried on that I didn't actually mind (which is the only faintest of praise I have to give this collection):

The tiny star pattern is pretty, and the A-line shape is one that always looks good on me (even if I do say so myself!)
----END TOR----

----COMMENCE BECKY----

I'm going to have to impinge a little on Tor's commentary and it's all my fault. Co-bloggers should have a seamless photo-passing system and unfortunately our system was derailed primarily because I was distracted making many cups of tea. Caffeine is my co-pilot!!! as the the bumper stickers say. With that in mind, here's a picture of my gal in one of the key pieces from the collection (at least the one in all the KM promotional ads) - the star shirt.

KM on the beach w/aforementioned shirt (£35)

My gal in the changing room, boxed out of her brains in the boxy box shirt showed previou

Seriously, what is up with the uber-square cut? If you have to shore up the sleeves, ditch your bra and undo all but one button to make a garment work then surely it misses the classification 'shirt' but some margin. But hey, 'Supermodel Endorses Scarf with Arms' is hardly a Grazia-worthy headline.

Gee, and do we really want the whole 'supermodel endorsed' look? I think the diminishing crowds ceasing their rioting outside Topshop have shown that we've realised as a collective that little vintage-esque frocks and skinny jeans with the KM logo don't exactly, y'know, spin you round the telephone booth and transform you into a paparazzi-ready megablonde bazillionaire. Telephone booths are in short supply these days. Good thing that Tor has the ability to wear the clothes and look just exactly like her fabulous self and not a bit Kate Klone. I'm also loving the optical illusion on her bosom. She is just the cutest pie.

Stripey Cardigan, (£40)

Now prepared to be near-blinded by the whiteness of my winter skin. As my own beloved says, I'm not the beautiful milky pale of the Irish but instead the sickly pale of one allergic to the sun. Either way, Vogue endorses my look, so he can suck it. Here I am, gleaming in the Scarf Neck Dress (£40)

It be cute, I guess but not £40 cute. It's £15 H&M cute. Plus, not only does it has the accursed racer-back but also a chronic case of BBT (bizarre buttock tailoring)

Flickr has taught me that there is quite the fetish base for VPL and Gentlemen Perverts, in this and subsequent photos, I think you'll find your needs catered for and amply.

Peacock Party Dress

Racer-back again, kiddos. Being an unexceptionally dull-witted young woman, I put the dress on back-to-front and I don't know about you, but I prefer it that way. I like my bling below my chin and wide crazy cut-outs for armholes.

Maybe you prefer the boob squidged dumpy 'right-way-round' version. That is your privilege.

Now onto the ubiquitous floral dainty-twee frock, this season represented by the Daisy Print Teadress (£60)

Not the greastest image ever but all I have to offer. It's not badly constructed, what with the side zip to facilitate a figure-hugging silhouette but my boyfriend took one look at the pic and gravely pronounced: "It looks like you're wearing a giant blue labia".

Then it was all I could see.

Still, I had more luck with the casual stuff. Say what you like about me, I know how to wear a cape. It is one of my chief talents.

Sequin cape (£80) & butt-ugly KM t-shirt (£20)

Seriously, why would you commission a t-shirt that makes you look like the album art for a cut price Guns & Roses tribute act?

Seriously y'all. Compare and contrast.

That said, as with all the KM casual wear, vests and tees alike, it is made of a nice soft cotton and is nicely cut to fit around curves. Still, for £20, you'd expect that, wouldn't you?

Hmm. So this collection is pretty much a dud, except for the fine discovery of a pretty star dress for Tor. I liked the cape and appreciate that all the sequins were hand attached. Have to say that we were hardly transported to "Ibiza, Miami, India and beyond" as the press release claimed. This so-called eclecticism was all very well-worn ground and in terms of the Kate Moss collections so far, was all much of a muchess: sequins, lurex, short shorts destined to make a permanent home all up in the crotch. At least the materials have improved.

Now the Topshop/Kate Moss design team need to acknowledge the breast and stop repeating their basic shapes/patterns and we'll be getting somewhere. My buttocks, however, haven't forgiven them for the first collection:

Wigmore, in the size 14 pant. 8.30am, 1st day of 1st Kate Moss collection. May 2007.
Oy.
Good times.

Love,
Becky & Tor.

The Topshop sale: Where the mighty fall

I woke up yesterday morning feeling brave and decided to leave my bed. I know, i'm crazy! So I dressed (rather shabbily i'm ashamed to admit) and hit the Topshop sale.

Now im sorry to disapoint you lovely readers, but I think the motherland has seriously let us down: On the whole I was rather unimpressed. Rather than finding wintery dresses or snuggly knitwear, or in fact anything from the A/W07 collection, the rails were full of dresses and T-shirts left over from last summer. For me, this wasn't a terrible situation: i'm heading to the states in March (I know, get me!) and needed some extra bits and bobs. But under normal circumstances I think I would've escaped after a fruitless rummage through the first 3 rails. Not the January Sales experience i'd been looking forward to!

But then lo and behold, what should I find, but this:

No, not Kate Moss (even i'm not that good a shopper!) but the white 'must-have' 1 shoulder dress from her first collection for Topshop.

I'm not going to tell you a lie, dear reader; I slated the Kate Moss @ TS collection from the off. The concept, the shabby designs, the (over)price: non of this sat well with me. But I also secretly coverted that little white dress. As did a bevvy of sensible and rather fashionable celebs such as Selma Blair:

And she and I weren't the only ones. I'm sure i'm not telling you anything new when I talk of the hype that surrounded the launch of the first collection. Topshop hired bouncers and implemented a limited purchase system of just 5 items per person, allowing each person to view the collection for only 20 minutes. And hundreds of excited Moss/Topshop/Fashion fans queued for hours for this privelage. The collection was predicted to sell out within the first week: good news for Phillip Green and Ms Moss who was paid £3 million for putting her name to (ahem. i mean 'designing') the collection.

Or so they thought. Cue my visit to the January sales where the rails are full of left over Kate Moss-wear and the 'designer' styles are cheaper than a plain white topshop tee. I always thought Kate Moss would look good in anything, but it seems even she can't pull off the 'hate to say i told you so, you've got egg on your face' look. The general public have spoken with their spending power yet again, and the verdict is that Kate should get back to her day job: wearing mediocre outfits and hanging out with Indie boys. Still, Kates loss is my gain. 1 perfect coverted dress for a mere £4.50. Yup, that's £45.50 less than rrp. And whilst i'm no Selma Blair, I think it looks rather lovely:

Kate Moss eat your heart out, eh?

The big debate: High waisted jeans?

Ok, so it was a trend that was huge in celeb-land (yes, that is a real place!) aaages ago! But as Primark have just got some rather lovely dark denim wide legged examples in store, i've only really started to consider whether it was a trend that will work for me this week. (The thought of paying £60 for the Kate Moss @ Topshop pair made me dismiss the trend when it first hit the highstreet this summer) High waisted jeans. Yes reader, i did sense you recoil in horror!

Now, the style icons that are Ms Barton and Ms Moss managed to pull this look off beautifully. Behold:

However, i'm inclined to think that if you took away the flat tums and perky breasts and wore these very same outfits you might look a little bit like an Eighties mum doing the school-run. This belief isn't entirely unfounded either. Jessica Simpson (God bless her!) tried to pull of the high waisted look, but the combination of bad top choice (polo neck and high waisters was never going to be a good idea) and ample busom led straight to this style disaster:

Eeeek! Lovely Jessica is normally so beautiful, and yet in this photo it actually hurts to look!

This leads perfectly to my own denim dillemma. I am closer in figure to Jessica Simpson (I wish) than Kate Moss, so can I wear the high waisted jeans I crave (because they're from Primark and they're so soft and only £10)? The jury is still out:

It's a denim conundrum: high-waisted jeans mean denim clinging to your tummy and shortening your torso, but Low slung 'hipster jeans' (my usual denim of choice means love handles and (i'm sad to admit) an ample display of butt crack whenever I bend over. It's enough to make you hope this seasons dress revival will last forever isn't it?
